South African History

South Africa has a long and complex history. For many years, a system called apartheid separated people by their skin color. Apartheid began in 1948 and ended in the early 1990s. During apartheid, black people had fewer rights. They could not vote and had to live in separate areas. Nelson Mandela fought against apartheid. He was in prison for 27 years. In 1994, he became the first black president of South Africa. That year, all people could vote for the first time. Today, South Africa remembers this history to build a fairer society.
